Challenge for the mechanic - Programming brake modules for trailers and semi-trailers

Karol Filarski, Dział Wyposażenia Warsztatów

Programming new trailer or semi-trailer brake modules has always been a challenge for mechanics. As automotive technology evolves, braking systems become more advanced and complex.

Experts must not only understand the mechanical aspects of these systems, but also deal with the software that controls their operation. Today's brake modules require precise calibration and integration with other vehicle systems, which poses many new challenges for mechanics.

Why do we even have to do this?

Each new brake module should be diagnosticable after being connected to the trailer's installation. However, without data on the conditions in which it will operate, it is not able to precisely perform its task and brake. That is why the engineers designed such an unprogrammed module to operate in emergency mode - it will brake with great intensity from the very beginning, and thus drastically wear out mechanical elements of the system such as discs, pads or tires.

In order to properly operate the brake system of a semi-trailer or trailer, it is necessary to precisely determine the parameters of the vehicle in which the module is installed. This process requires detailed analysis and consideration of many factors that affect the operation of the brake system. These include, among others, the following data:

  • number of axles,
  • tire size,
  • information about executive elements,
  • such as suspension control actuators,
  • additional functions.

The most important information, however, is the calculation of the braking pressure in relation to the weight of the load.

What options do we have?

With multi-brand diagnostics , such as TEXA or JALTEST, the easiest way is to copy parameters from the old module and upload them to the new one. If we have taken care of the compatibility of the module versions, this process should go smoothly.

The above method will work as long as the old module has working electronics or the mechanic was forward-looking and previously archived the parameters of the serviced trailers.

If this is not the case, we can choose an alternative method. Which one? All parameters from the nameplate on the trailer must be entered manually. This method is quite laborious, but it is all about safety! On the nameplate of most manufacturers we should find all the necessary data for programming. Remember with this method that your tester should have the latest version of software. This is important because in the past it was not always possible for the user to program individual parameters.

What if there is no plate available or it is illegible?

Then you really are facing a challenge. It depends on you whether the trailer will brake correctly and SAFELY, whether the braking pressures will be sufficient to stop the set with a huge load. If you want to do your job correctly, you can contact the trailer manufacturer and, providing the VIN, ask for the parameters to be sent. If you have found a reliable contractor, you will receive the parameters necessary to program the brake module in paper form or as a file ready to be uploaded.

Workshop practice shows that mechanics often copy parameters from a semi-trailer with a similar or similar configuration. Is this the right way? Remember that every programming leaves a so-called finger print in the electronics. In a situation where the semi-trailer has an accident, it will be possible to determine the causes and perpetrator of the collision. By performing parameterization, you take responsibility for it being done in accordance with the art, and it clearly states: we program the semi-trailer modules with parameters calculated for this particular semi-trailer.

And finally, after each programming, remember to perform the final test, the so-called EOL (End of Line). Thanks to it, you will confirm the correctness of the performed process. Only after the test will the trailer exit emergency mode and start behaving according to the entered parameters.
