A challenge for a mechanic - Programming braking modules of semi-trailers and trailers

Karol Filarski, Dział Wyposażenia Warsztatów

Programming new modules of the braking system of a semi-trailer or trailer has always been a challenge for mechanics. As automotive technology evolves, braking systems become more advanced and complex.

Specialists must not only understand the mechanical aspects of these systems, but also deal with the software that controls their operation. Modern braking modules require precise calibration and integration with other vehicle systems, which poses many new challenges for mechanics.

Why do we even have to do this?

Each new braking module should be able to be diagnosed after being connected to the trailer's installation. However, without data on the conditions in which it will operate, it is unable to precisely perform its task and brake. That 's why the engineers designed such an unprogrammed module to operate in emergency mode - it will brake with great intensity from the very beginning, thus drastically wearing out the mechanical elements of the system such as discs, pads and tires.

In order to properly use the braking system of a semi-trailer or trailer, it is necessary to precisely determine the parameters of the vehicle in which the module is installed. This process requires a detailed analysis and consideration of many factors that affect the operation of the braking system. These include, among others: the following data:

  • number of axles,
  • tire size,
  • information about actuators,
  • such as suspension control actuators,
  • additional functions.

However, the most important information is the calculation of the braking pressure in relation to the weight of the load.

What options do we have?

With multi-brand diagnostics , such as TEXA or JALTEST, the easiest way is to copy the parameters from the old module and upload them to the new one. If we ensure the compatibility of the module versions, this process should go smoothly.

The above method will work if the old module has functional electronics or the mechanic was foresighted and previously archived the parameters of the operated trailers.

However, if this is not the case, we can choose an alternative method. What? All parameters from the nameplate on the trailer must be entered manually. This method is quite tedious, but it's about safety! Most manufacturers' nameplates should contain all the data needed for programming. When using this method, remember that your tester has the latest version of the software. This is important because in the past the possibility of programming individual parameters was not always available to the user.

What if there is no sign available or it is illegible?

Then you actually face a challenge. It's up to you whether the trailer will brake properly and SAFELY, and whether the braking pressures will be sufficient to stop the set with a huge load. If you want to do your job properly, you can contact the trailer manufacturer and ask for the parameters by providing the VIN. If you have found a reliable contractor, you will receive the parameters necessary to program the braking module in paper form or in the form of a file ready to be uploaded.

Practice in workshops shows that mechanics often copy parameters from a semi-trailer with a similar or similar configuration. Is this the right way? Remember that all programming leaves the so-called finger printing in electronics. If the trailer has an accident, it will be possible to determine the causes and the perpetrator of the collision. By performing parameterization, you are responsible for ensuring that it is done according to the art, and this is clear: we program trailer modules with parameters calculated for this particular trailer.

And finally, after each programming, remember to perform a final test, the so-called EOL (End of Line). Thanks to it, you will confirm the correctness of the process performed. Only after completing the test will the trailer exit the emergency mode and start behaving in accordance with the entered parameters.
